Earth, Wind and Fire … and Water – The Elemental Smart Home Trends Taking us into 2025

Putting familiar elements together in new and original ways is the key to innovation, according to futurist Jacque Fresco. Going into 2025 his words ring especially true as smart home trends seem to be taking an especially elemental turn in the new year. Perhaps these were not the elements Mr. Fresco envisioned, but their ability to bring health, nature and energy into our lives can only be a good thing.

EARTH – ‘A Nespresso for your vegetables.’

We began with earth in this elemental preview of smart home trends for two reasons. Admittedly the main motivation was to incorporate the name of the legendary 70s funk band into our little blog title. But we also wanted to kick off with what might be the cutest and cleverest little piece of smart technology we have seen for a while.

The Plantaform smart indoor garden uses a NASA-developed ‘fogponics’ system to hydrate plants with ultra-fine vapour. This means that plants in the Plantaform grow significantly faster than they would otherwise and use 30-50% less water.

Physically, the Plantaform consists of a black or white egg-shaped greenhouse vessel with a column down the centre and full-spectrum LED lights. In this column are 15 holes for planting your vegetables in the form of no-soil seed pods.  Nutrient-loaded water vapour is propelled up the middle of the central column while the LED lights give the plants the pseudo-solar energy they need. This is all controlled by the Plantaform’s smart hub according to the plants' needs. It is worth noting that this system is by far the lowest maintenance one on the market at the moment, only needing water top-ups and extra fertiliser every couple of weeks. The system even cleans itself between plants, which is something that few of its competitors boast.

Putting aside technicalities and statistics, the Plantaform really does look beautiful and the ability to grow your vegetables faster via fogponics is well worth considering.

WIND – Holistic wellness systems using air purification…

Hydroponic salad growth systems are a great way to keep yourself healthy, but they are only one of many wellness solutions offered on the modern smart technology market. Smart systems alone can only do so much. Fortunately, health and wellness technology like hydroponics systems, advanced air conditioning and filtration is finally catching up. The integration of these innovations might just mean that 2025 is the year smart technology makes a real impact on the six-trillion-dollar wellness market.

Smart AC air purifiers are a pre-existing technology that is predicted to make the switch from occasional splurge-spend to regular home investment in 2025. The reason is that people are quickly seeing the benefits of this technology combo. To quote one Reddit user “Yes, air purifiers are worth the investment, even for those without allergies or breathing issues. They improve air quality by removing pollutants, dust, and other particles, creating a healthier environment. You can see what you are breathing in. When you check the filter after a few days or weeks. You will thank me.”

There are great air conditioning and purification solutions for all types of smart homes. Purifiers are great for anyone who wants to experience fresh air in their home. This works particularly well for those with allergies or breathing sensitivity. Just get in touch with us at the top right to learn more.

Circadian lighting

Circadian lighting is another aerial wellness advancement that is expected to raise its head in the automation industry in 2025. These lights will automatically simulate the right type of natural light at each time of day. In the morning, our minds and bodies often need bright, blue light to wake up fully. Meanwhile in the evenings, warmer yellow light helps our minds slow down and drift towards sleep. It has been shown that this small change can improve our mood and physical health massively over the long term. What’s more, modern home automation systems can gradually make these changes from minute to minute, day to day with no input from you, giving you the best possible outcome.

FIRE – Energy management and solar power pairing

Among smart home trends, intelligent energy management is hardly the newest kid on the block. However, a Forbes survey of the smart home industry’s leading executives showed that these pros believe 2025 will bring some tangible progress where recently there has been more talking than action.

This is because the UK has entered a nexus where various pieces of increasingly popular technology are set to benefit from smart technology over the next few years: Of the 28 million British homes, 5% or 1.4 million now run primarily on solar energy. Many of these have whole-home batteries and, while there are many upsides to solar energy, they can face varying energy supplies which need to be controlled carefully.

The solution to these challenges? Smart energy systems like those offered by Savant to maximise energy efficiency and use at the right time.

At the same time, heat pumps are providing cheaper and potentially much smarter heating to households around the UK. They are currently selling 60,000 units a year with the help of the British Government’s £7,500 grant offer. The Government aims, somewhat optimistically, to increase these sales to 600,000 by 2028. All that is needed are smart management systems to bring these and other technologies together.

Intelligent energy management

Josh Christian, CEO of the Home Technology Association told Forbes; “A big trend right now is whole home backup batteries … An intelligent power system empowers homeowners with intelligent energy management solutions ... By integrating with smart home systems, it enables real-time monitoring of energy usage, solar power optimization, and backup battery management. Homeowners can prioritize critical devices during outages, reduce energy costs, and make sustainable choices with ease. Designed for convenience and resilience, a power management system delivers innovative tools to help homeowners live smarter and more sustainably.”

The increasing cost of gas and living in general makes smart energy management a priority for many frugal homeowners, as well as those who care about sustainability and the environment. This creates a situation where whole-home systems like Savant Power and Tesla Energy are seeing quickly increasing demand.

WATER – Smart water control

Water damage is the cause of around a quarter of all home insurance claims, and we have the smart technology to get it under control. Smart water sensors use flow rate sensing and artificial intelligence to learn your water consumption patterns and detect anything unusual. If they notice anything potentially problematic like a leak, they can let you know via mobile and shut off your mains water supply. This seemingly small bit of clever detection and response can prevent thousands of pounds of damage, and a crisis that can really ruin your week. We all know someone who has had a leak or a flood, so we probably don't need to tell you that it is worth investing in ending this worry.

In addition to ending leaks, smart water sensors can help you monitor and improve your water consumption in several ways. You can set goals, stop drips, and control use by all your appliances. This can improve your home’s sustainability and environmental friendliness. More complete versions of these systems can also purge your pipes, cut water use further and filter your drinking water.

Conclusion: 2025 has all the elements of a healthy, energetic year

Here’s to your health! A lot of the smart home trends we are seeing approaching in 2025 relate to wellbeing and wellness. This is an area that has been relatively untouched by home automation in the past. As we strive to live longer, happier, healthier lives, the use of new smart tech solutions to aid this quest seems overdue.

On a more familiar path, smart energy and water management technologies are pairing with new supply-side innovations. This coordination is giving homeowners a new level of control over the resources they use.
